During the summer of 2017, I had the opportunity to return to the city where I grew up and get active in local politics. I was lucky to find a candidate that I was excited to support and fortunate to be able to work on the campaign team.
Growing up in Everett, I was determined to hate it. Particularly as a teenager, I found it boring, suburban and basically uncool. After spending a few years in the big city, I became more fond of Everett especially knowing that every time I returned I could just as easily leave and go back to Seattle. However, being involved in Cassie's campaign and listening to her vision for the city changed by perception of hum-drum Everett. As a person that chose to move her family to Everett, Cassie has a passion and optimism for the future of Everett that I had never heard. While the town has many champions, most that I was familiar with praised the traditions associated with the city and what I would call "old Everett," After hearing Cassie speak numerous times and getting to know those engaged in Everett politics, I gained a new perspective on the future of this city and appreciation for its present state. These experience helped reconnect me to my hometown and has given my mom immense joy in the possibility that life may not lead me as far away from home as I once thought. |
At the outset of my senior year, I began an internship at Strategies 360. Through developing research memos, drafting press releases and compiling weekly newsletters, I have assisted with the communication team. This internship has given me an invaluable experience to learn from experts in government relations, communication strategy and public affairs.
