My reflection at the end of the service learning course:
"For the service learning aspect of this course, I volunteered for the program Y-Scholars at Garfield High School and worked mainly with African American 10th grade students. I went to Garfield twice a week for their after school sessions. At the outset of this quarter, I was not very excited to be tutoring. I had never done it before and I know I don’t like working with kids. For this reason, I wanted to work in a high school. I still thought that I would hate it. But after only two weeks, my expectations were wholly changed. I actually became friends with the students I was tutoring and the other tutors within the program. I think the best aspect of my work at Garfield has been talking to students about college and my experiences rather than helping with geometry problems. While I first thought I would be counting down the days until I was done with this tutoring, I have now committed to continuing with the program and the students that I have developed a relationship with." |
