This reflection occurred in the first week of my time at the UW and gives a starting point for further development.

This assignment proved to be by far the most useful exercise of my freshman year. By taking the time to master the UW registration system, I was well prepared to craft my schedule.

This was the final piece I wrote for Honors 100 that reflects on my first quarter at the University of Washington.

Through this course, I was exposed to a rampant problem in our society I had never put much thought into: slavery. In all of my earlier education, I was taught that slavery in America ended with the Civil War. It was horrifying and eye-opening to learn that slavery is still very much an issue in our country today and around the world. I took this course fall quarter of my freshman year of college along with a required introductory english course and the first course of the calculus series at UW--at the time I thought I would need this class to pursue business. Taking this honors course on human trafficking, which included doing volunteer work for Seattle Against Slavery, showed me how much I did not yet know about the world and exposed the ways greed and money can lead people to do terrible things. In the end, I realized that I did not want to spend four years learning about business and money when there was so much more I could be learning.
I have included three papers I worked on for this class. The first is a group paper discussing sex trafficking through nail salons, generally in Washington, Oregon, and California. After this, each student was able to choose a country to study in a research paper; I chose to research Moldova for this report. Lastly, I have included my final paper for this course in which I expanded on my country report to take a closer look at international organizations and their work to counter trafficking in Moldova. These papers show my work at the very beginning of my college career and were the start of an interest in human rights issues. |
